Dr. Hartzell's dedication to his students was undeniable. I have many fond memories of him (1979-1982). He definitely made an impression and I will always consider him one of my favorites. So sorry for your loss.

Phyllis, I was so sad to see that Richard passed away. (I'm sorry I didn't see the obituary sooner - I'm usually a bit behind with my newspapers.) I know that Dick was an extraordinary, most accomplished gentleman, and a true mensch, to boot.
I'm truly sorry for your loss, as well as Karin and Stephen's loss, and their precious children's loss as well.
I have an especially nice memory of you and Dick and I playing Scrabble one evening in your living room. I also think of him often (really, I do!) because I am still trying to work out whether or not he was correct in his opinion that when discussing one's health, one should say, "I feel good" as opposed to "I feel well." You and I, Phyllis, had fun discussing that every so often; do you remember?
If at all possible, please contact me via my email address when you get a chance. I have thought of you very often over the years and still miss you.
Again, my deepest sympathy for your loss.
Love,
Marsha

I'm sorry to hear of Dick's passing. We worked together many years at Pomona, and I always enjoyed spending time with him, socially or professionally. I could always count on him for his diligence in doing the right thing, intelligence, and sense of humor.

Richard was a very kind, thoughtful and humorous man whom I had the pleasure of getting to know when he and Phyllis would visit my dear friends - the family of Richard's brother, Gene - in Vienna. The world craves for people with Richard Hartzell's heart, character and spirit. May they continue through all of those who knew him, learned from him, and loved him.
With deepest sympathies to Phyllis and the entire Hartzell family.

What can one say about the kindest, loveliest uncle I ever knew, except that I feel blessed we were able to see so much of you and your wonderful family during the last 40 years.
I still giggle when reading the speech you made at my wedding. Your humour and kindness will be missed by us all. Melly, John, Stella and Timothy

Dr. Hartzell was a always the epitome of a great dad and granddad. It was ever apparent how much his family meant to him as he and Mrs. Hartzell were always present at Rebecca's birthday gatherings when we'd come. He was always an interesting man to hold a conversation with and as we read his obituary, we know he will be missed by so many. Our prayers are with the family...Eric, Angela, Antonio, and Arianna Trapp
