Fidel Santiago Swana, MD, returned to the Lord peacefully on May 20, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Ileana. He will always be remembered as a loving father and grandfather by his four children and their families: Hubert and Susan Swana of Celebration, FL, Steve, Claudia, Sophia, Andrew and Sarah Bernstein of McClean, VA, Fidel, Hsinmi, Fidella and Hayden Swana of Rego Park, NY, Alexander and Tina Swana of Pittsburgh, PA.
He was a long serving member of St. John's Parrish in Goshen, NY. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dignity, strength and character.
He grew up in Belize and studied medicine in Guatemala at the University of San Carlos. He immigrated to the United States in and completed fellowship training in Child Psychiatry at the Columbia University School of Medicine. He worked for over thirty-five years at area hospitals. He served as president of the Middletown Psychiatric Center Medical Staff Office. He served as the Residency Training and Medical Education Director. He also served honorably in the United States Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel, working as a medical officer at Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Meade, and Keller Army Hospital. He believed in treating every person with kindness and respect. He dedicated himself to improving the health and well-being of each of his patients.
The Swana family would like to thank the staff at Orange Regional Medical Center especially Drs. David Ramos, Deogenes DeLeon and Agusto Rosas, the staff at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital including Drs. Matthew Mauer and Andrew Eisenberger. Thank you to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for their care, compassion and support. Thank you and all our gratitude to Ellie, Joanne, Erin, Sister Ann, Father Thomas and to all our Christian friends for their love, prayers and support.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 23 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Donovan Funeral Home, Inc, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, May 24 at 1:00 pm at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 71 Murray Ave, Goshen.
Burial will follow in Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Campbell Hall, New York.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
