Robert Winston Thorley, 74 of Blooming Grove, NY, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, NY after a long battle with cancer.
Robert was born July 11, 1940 in Damascus, PA, the son of Leslie W. Thorley and Edna (Barnes) Thorley. At an early age, he moved to Red Hook, NY - his hometown. After graduating from Red Hook Central High School, he continued his education at the State University College at Buffalo and later at Manhattan College where he received an M.A.
He began his teaching career at East Ramapo Central Schools in Spring Valley, NY and later taught at Minisink Valley Middle School in Slate Hill, NY. He retired from there in 2001. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and spending summers at his house in South Orleans on Cape Cod.
He is survived by his wife, Marion H. (Hershey) Thorley, to whom he was married for over 50 years.
He is survived by his sons: Charles A. "Chad" Thorley and wife, Christina of Silver Spring, MD and Mark R. Thorley of Boston, MA; brother, Brooke Thorley and wife, Beatrice of Marstons Mills, MA; sister, Barbara Olson and husband, David of Westlake, OR; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Hart and brothers: Kenneth, Colin, and Roger Thorley.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 29th at the Donovan Funeral Home, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, March 30th at St. James' Episcopal Church, 1 St. James Place, Goshen, NY with Father Carl Lunden officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Cemetery, Barrytown, NY at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James' Episcopal Church, 1 St. James Pl., Goshen, NY 10924.
