CHARLES WALTER HOFFMAN January 16, 1925 - March 10, 2009 Campbell Hall, NY Charles Walter Hoffman, 84 years old, of Campbell Hall, a life-long resident of Orange County, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. He was born on January 16, 1925 in Wallington, New Jersey to Christof Hoffmann and Agnes Reiker Hoffmann of Goshen, New York. He is survived by his devoted wife, Theresa Flannery Hoffman, Nancy Hoffman and Peter Schmidt of New York City, Mary and Bruce Estrella of Cape Cod, Carol Hoffman and Fred Budde of Goshen, Jane and Gary Esposito of Goshen, and Charles and Sally Vriesma Hoffman of Port Crane, NY and his brother, John Hoffman of Wappingers Falls, his sister-in-law, Wanda Hoffman of Manasas, Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews. He very much enjoyed the company of his grandchildren, Brandon and Elyse Estrella and Melissa, Emily and Thomas Esposito. He is predeceased by his daughter Kathleen Agnes Hoffman Renna, his sisters Agnes, Hilda, and Doris, and his brothers Albert, Edward and Christopher. Charlie was proud of his professional relationships as a carpenter and secretary-treasurer of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local No. 19, of which he was a member for over 55 years. He attended grammar school at the one-room schoolhouse on Hill Road, Town of Goshen, NY, until the school was centralized. He then graduated from Goshen Central High School in 1941. He graduated from the Delhi Institute of Technology, Delhi, NY, in 1949. He excelled as a pitcher for Goshen Central's baseball team, and he also pitched in the college league at Delhi. In his youth, he won a trip to St. Louis to judge vegetables with the Wallkill Boys 4-H Club. He was also a member of the local Future Farmers of America, and as a member, in 1942, he was awarded The Dairymen's League essay prize. An avid bowler throughout his life, he bowled for Delhi, and was a member of both the Goshen and Middletown Bowling Leagues. He won numerous trophies for both his pitching and bowling. He was an accomplished hunter, fisherman and conservationist. He was a member of the Mamakating game club, the Middletown Elks Club and supported the County Seat Conservation Club for many years. The family would like to offer thanks to all the special people at Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, especially nurses Marty and JoJo, Anne, and Helen, as well as the special caretakers who gave their best efforts for so long. Social worker Ellen, Sister Ann Daley and Mrs. Carmen Lagrutta are also on the thank-you list for their spiritual help. Visitation will be Sunday, March 15, 2009 from 4-7 pm at the Donovan Funeral Home, Inc., 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 16, 2009 at 10:00 am in St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 71 Murray Ave., Goshen. Burial will follow in Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown, NY.
