Obituary of Claire F. Meany

Claire Forbes Meany, a long time resident of Goshen, New York passed away on May 5, 2018 at the age of 98 at Orange Regional Medical Center. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Edward F. Meany. Daughter of Robert Belmont Forbes and Claire Fraser Forbes, she was born on October 31, 1919 in Orange, New Jersey. At an early age she moved with her parents to Bloomingburg, New York. She graduated from Middletown High School, Class of 1936.
Her early career included acting as Executive Secretary to Orange County Assistant Attorney, General Martin Rosenblum. Following her love of country, she applied in the first group of women to serve in the newly created W.A.V.E.S. She was commissioned as a yeoman and served from 1943 until the end of World War II. She was stationed at the Key West, Florida U.S. Naval Station.
Following her military career service, she returned to Middletown. She married Edward F. Meany at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Middletown on June 5, 1948. The remainder of her life was devoted to family and community. She was a 30 year volunteer in St. James Church Altar Guild. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and family.
She is survived by her son, E. Brian Meany and wife, MaryBeth of Goshen, New York and her daughter Judith A. Meany and husband John Protopappas of Waterford, Virginia: seven grandchildren, Alison Kendrick and husband Scott, Lauren McCabe and husband Tom, Lt. USN Mary Rose Kingston and husband Captain USMC Peter, Edward C. Meany, Sr. Airman USAF, Christina Alexander and husband Robert, Peter Protopappas and wife Jessica and Stephanie Tatum and husband Anthony; four great grandchildren, Kinsley Kendrick, Seamus McCabe, Caroline Alexander and Matthew Alexander.
There will be a private visitation for immediate family only. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. James Episcopal Church in Goshen, NY with burial to follow in Slate Hill Cemetery, Goshen.
Donations in her name may be made to St James Episcopal Church or St Jude's Children's Hospital.
