Joan Tower Flannery was born in Goshen, NY on January 11, 1930 and raised in Maybrook, NY. She was the daughter of Russell F. and Ethel May Eignor Tower. She graduated from Maybrook High School (Class of 1947) and the Spencerian Business School of Newburgh. Joan married S. Francis "Fig" Flannery on January 5, 1952. Joan was pure love. A woman of great faith and generosity, she gave herself completely to her family, her church and her community serving God in her capacity as wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, granddaughter, great grandmother, aunt, niece, friend, cousin and citizen. She was a member of the Maybrook United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Otterkill Engine Company, the Rural Letter Carrier Association, Hamptonburgh Democratic Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Flannery Dusenberry VFW post. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts, the Goshen Central School Parent Teacher Association, the American Red Cross, and the Mental Health Association. Joan worked as a bookkeeper before becoming a mother, and she delivered mail in Campbell Hall for twenty-five years. She was a lover of the arts and nature. She filled her children and grandchildren with love to renew them for the week ahead with her awesome Sunday dinners. She had an infinite capacity for love and kindness. Survived by her children Elizabeth and George Jung, Dr. Catherine Flannery, Mary and Nolly Climes, Stephen and Carma Flannery, and Jean and Thomas Overstrom, her grandchildren Kyle Jung, Carly and John Fasano, Grace and Olivia Flannery, Joan Climes, Elizabeth DiGiovone, and Gregory, Sarah and Ryan Overstrom, great grandchildren John and Brooke Fasano, sister-in-law Karen Flannery, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, her grandmothers Jennie Tower and Edith Eignor, her husband, Fig, her sister Jean and her brother-in-law Dr. William B. Deyo, her sisters-in laws and brothers-in-laws Catherine and Arthur DeGroat, John and Ann Flannery, Robert Flannery, Theresa and Charles Hoffman, Dr. James and Regina Flannery, Thomas and Jane Flannery, Michael Flannery, and Margaret and Glen McGinnis. A Graveside Service to Celebrate her life will be held 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at St. Mary's Cemetery, 105 Railroad Ave, Montgomery, NY. A reception will follow the graveside service at a location to be announced. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made in Joan's name to People For People Fund, PO Box 249, Middletown, NY 10940 and the Maybrook United Methodist Church, 313 Homestead Ave, Maybrook, NY 12543.
