Obituary of John Tyler Mayo, II

John T. Mayo II September 10, 1933 – September 8, 2022 Goshen, NY John Tyler Mayo II, age 88, died September 8, 2022, two days short of his 89th birthday, after a brief illness. Born September 10, 1933, he was the only child of William A. Mayo and Doris Sinnott Mayo. A lifelong resident of Goshen, he left Goshen Central High School a half year early in 1951 to attend Colgate University, graduating in 1954. He then enlisted in the Air Force and was promoted to the level of Captain, being honorably discharged in 1957. He went on to receive his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Columbia University Law School in 1960. Upon graduation he worked for the Wall Street Law firm of Meyer, Kissell, Matz & Seward (now known as Seward & Kissell). Returning to Goshen in 1962, he joined his father in the family firm Mayo & Mayo. After 30 years in private practice he decided to close his office and became 'Of Counsel' to the Goshen firm of Norton & Christensen, until his retirement in 2008. He was active in numerous community organizations. He was a member of the Goshen Rotary Club for over 60 years, serving as their President from 1970-1971, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1995. He served as President for the Orange County Bar Association in 1979, the Goshen Bar Association in 1977, the Goshen Chamber of Commerce from 1971-1972, and the Middletown Sports Car Club in 1966. He served in various roles of many other organizations including the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Goshen Savings and Loan Association, the Town of Goshen Republican Committee, and the Orange County Arts Council, where he served as the Chairman of the Building Fund Committee and oversaw the first renovation of the Paramount Theater in Middletown. He loved music, reading, and discussing and debating politics with anyone who would listen. He held a private pilot's license and owned and flew his own plane. He was an avid sailor and was a member of the Newburgh Yacht Club for over 40 years. His true passion was cars. He was well known for his love of historic cars and racing exploits. He acquired his first racing license in 1987 from the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA). He spent the next 35 years following that passion racing in the VSCCA and the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). He accumulated numerous race wins including several New York Road Racing Championships and North Atlantic Road Racing Championships. He was a sought-after track instructor for BMW, Jaguar, and Ferrari Sports Car Clubs at such tracks as Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen International Speedway, Pocono Raceway and Monticello Motor Club. John was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Doris Mayo, and his devoted wife of 61 years, Ann P. Mayo. He is survived by his three children Susan Mayo Lusk (Jonathan), Elizabeth Mayo Filippi (Fred), and John T. Mayo III (Christen); and his grandchildren, William and Katherine Lusk and Anna, Tyler, and Daniel Mayo. In addition, he is survived by a number of Sheldons and Sinnottsin Utica, NY as well as his niece Ann Elizabeth Hofmann (Dan), two great nieces, Jenna (Jason) and Lauren, his nephew Mario James Argano (Darlene), and his great nephew Michael Luke Argano. John's family would like to thank his wonderful caretakers from CareOne at Ridgewood Avenue and Ascend Hospice, as well as the staff at Crystal Run Healthcare, especially Dr. Spencer, Dr. Gotsis, Dr. Izikson, and Dr. Baker. Service to be held at 10am, September 17, 2022, at Saint John the Evangelist Church, 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York. Burial to follow in the family plot at the Hamptonburgh Cemetery.
