The first day I met Paul he wrote me a song. His love for life was contagious, his wit unparalleled and his heart an open book. I will never forget him and cherish the magical times we shared.

Paul was such a great man, with a bright energy and a humorous soul. We had many laughs over the years at Marge’s store. He will be missed.

It was a lifetime of knowing about each other, and only a few fleeting moments of knowing each other in person. My mom, Thelma MacPhee Hryhor loved her cousin, Wanda MacPhee Smith very much. That love carried on to us, their children. I will forever treasure Paul as one of the most beautiful, kindest souls I have ever known. The love and tenderness he showed my son was unparalleled. At that time, Alexander was only 2 1/2 years old. He would always call Paul “My honey”. It was so very special. Paul, you are forever in our hearts, a blessing beyond measure.

I was so sorry and shocked to read about your dear brother’s recent illness and passing. Paul and the entire Smith family were so special to our family. Susan, John Tyler and I were just fondly reminiscing about all of the great times we had with Paul when he helped my parents with the yard work or babysat us or whenever we saw him in town. His genuine smile and sparkling personality always lit up the room. On behalf of the Mayo siblings, we are sending you our heartfelt condolences on the loss of a great man. With deepest sympathies, Elizabeth Mayo Filippi

Paul my friend and Brother from another Mother. This is so hard to write. To put in words what you meant to me. To my family and my wife Elaine who mourns with me!
I’ll never forget that tragic phone call from Duke University hospital when you let me know you had cancer and the Chemo and Radiation you were going to have. You were never afraid but you were concerned that the Radiation would wipe out your memory.
You could probably tell I was weeping- but you said Chuck Brother…don’t cry…remember all our great memories. I have lived a full life and enjoyed it so much! I don’t want you to remember me with tears but all the laughter we shared.
I will always remember our monthly calls where I learned of your expansive travels and adventures. I was in awe of you but I rejected your idea of meeting up with you in New Orleans, Florida, or Northern California! Oh how I wish I had joined you!
I’m so sorry I cannot honor your request to not cry or remember you with tears. I will try my best to ease your concerns with my excessive use of condiments. However, if you need to come down from Heaven and remind me to stop - that’d be nice!
I will always love you and keep you in my thoughts as I do your Sister Toni and your parents Ernie and Wanda. Your family took this irreverent New Hampshire boy under their wings and into their hearts. I’m so grateful to call you Brother. I will do my best to do anything your family needs. Your Brother Peter is my Brother. Your Sisters are my Sisters. Their love for you and their dedication and compassion to you in these last few months is so incredibly inspiring. I love them too and so grateful to be part of your life and your family.
Love you my Brother- Chuck & Elaine Carey

Q: What will you miss most about Paul?
A: As a caseworker I traveled a lot and would text Paul to call so we could catch up. Our conversations were so fulfilling . We listened to each other. When I got Breast cancer he was the best friend . Let me cry . I went into deep depression and yes I have a loving husband, but Paul helped dig me out. We were almost married but instead chose to be each others best friends forever . I will miss him forever .
