Obituary of Charles W. Bynum

Charles (Charley) W.Bynum Charles W. (Charley) Bynum passed on from this life into God's hands on Tuesday, August 7th at ORMC following a valiant fight with cancer. Charley was the son of the late James Monroe Bynum and Addie Phillips Bynum on October 2, 1923 in Oneonta, Alabama. Although Charley left Alabama to join the CCC's after high school, he never lost that southern drawl or "southern-gentleman manners". Charley joined the Marines after the US entered WWII, serving as a gunner and bombardier in the Southern Pacific arena as a member of the 4th Airwing Marines 13th Airgroup. He served nobly throughout WWII and continued to serve during the Korean War. Charley's civilian life led him to construction/excavation projects including the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) and President Eisenhower's farm at Gettysburg National Park. His work on the NYS Thruway brought him to the Orange County area where he married Winifred L. Russell and raised their four children in Goshen, NY. Charley is survived by his wife, Winnie, at home his son, Jan (Debbie), daughters Brenda Kujawski (Andy) of Port Charlotte, Fla; Wendy Bynum-Wade (Douglas) of Goshen; and Karyn Maier (Andreus) of Saugerties. He is also survived by grandchildren Andrew (Danielle), Sarah (Carlos), Luke (Heather), Ashley, Kyle, Michael, Amy (Will), Matt, Andy, Michael and Aaron as well as great-grandchildren Carlos, Gabrielle, Victoria and Katelyn. He is also survived by sister IvaLee Rutherford of North Carolina and many nieces, nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Lloyd, Clyde, Howard and sister LuluCanady. Charley was well loved and will be remembered by many from the VFW # 1708, American Legion Post #377, Elks Club of Middletown, First Presbyterian Church in Goshen, many square dance clubs throughout the area and countless others who were touched by Charley's kindness throughout the community at large on a day to day basis. There will be no visitation; services will be private at the convenience of the family.
