On Tues, I was privileged to attend the memorial service for Garry. I worked for the Orange County Department of Social Services from 1971 until 1979. That was a long time ago, but I often think about the impact Garry had on me at DSS and later in my life and professional career. Garry taught me the specifics and complexities of casework. His patience, fortitude, knowledge of casework and welfare regulations, analysis, and insight in the nuances of a specific situation were all superb. Above all, he treated his staff with dignity and class. As a boss, Garry was wonderful to work for. He was just special. After I left DSS, I went to graduate school and ended up on the faculty at the University of Illinois. Often, when I was developing teaching techniques and strategies, I reflected on the qualities that make an outstanding teacher. Garry exemplified those qualities. To me he was an excellent role model, as a teacher and a human being.

I will remember Gary fondly in my heart...memories of Howell's Luncheonette, visiting at Halloween, and playing board games with family at Wannasink Lake and Ocean City. I am so glad we were able to visit Gary with my Mom in October. God's comfort and blessings to Joan, Susan, Diane and Linda. With Sympathy and Love, Bonnie, Ron, Christa and family
