Obituary of Sophie Piggott

Sophie Stella Piggott, a longtime resident of Goshen, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 8, 2014 at the age of 84. She was predeceased by her husband Lee R. Piggott Jr. and daughter, Helen Piggott VonHusen; and her Skutnik siblings Anthony, Joseph, Edward, Stanislaus and Benjamin. She is survived by her sister Helen DeRosa of Trumbull, CT; her three children, daughter Sophie A. Piggott of Anna, TX; sons Lee Piggott O'Connell and wife, Karen, of Gales Ferry, CT, and Kenneth Piggott of Goshen, NY and wife, Ruth Garcia, of SC.; four cherished grandchildren, Denise VonHusen, Jessica Craig, Ryan Piggott O'Connell, and Shane Piggott O'Connell, who will forever remember her as "Bapchi"; and one great-granddaughter, Eryn VonHusen. Sophie was born December 28, 1929 to Polish immigrants Josephine Lepski and Anthony Skutnik in Pine Island, NY where she grew up on her family's onion farm. She met her husband Lee at a dance in 1948 and was married in 1949 at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Pine Island, NY. They settled down in Goshen NY and she devoted herself to raising her four children. As her children grew older, she went to work as a Nurses' Aide at Orange Farms Nursing Home from 1969 until retirement in 1985 and also assisted her husband in operating the family business, Piggott's Produce of Goshen until 1989. She was a parishioner of The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Goshen, NY. In her younger years Sophie enjoyed bowling and playing cards with friends. In retirement, she developed a flair for needle point and was a crossword puzzle wizard. She was an avid reader known well to the Goshen Public Librarians and her passion for words made her a fierce competitor at Scrabble. Very dear to her were her Chihuahuas, Cindy and Fawn. She and her husband, Lee, proudly celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 9, 2009 with family and friends. Though Sophie was small in stature, her capacity for love and kindness to others was infinite. Visitation and Funeral service will be held at the Donovan Funeral Home, 82 South Church Street, Goshen on Thursday, September 11, 2014 from 6-9 pm with the Service at 8:30 pm. Burial will be in Orange County Veterans cemetery at the family's discretion.
