Ethel Smith Bates Goshen, NY Ethel Smith Bates, 96, of Goshen, NY passed on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Glen Arden in Goshen. Ethel was born November 8, 1914 at home in Bronx, NY, the daughter of Martin and Marie (Meile) Rively. She was the widow of Charles Smith and Carroll Bates. Ethel was Co-owner, Secretary and Treasurer of Charles G. Smith, Inc., Newburgh, NY; her vocation was physical therapist in New York City. She was also a member and Treasurer of Fish Organization, first of three women as Treasurer to get government funds for Senior housing project in Washingtonville, Treasurer of HUB 2, Member and person in charge of flowers for St. Anne's Church in Washingtonville. Ethel is survived by her niece, Virginia (Ginger) Norton and her husband Charles E. of Goshen; grand nephews, Charles John Norton, Michael Shane Norton and J.D. Armstrong; grand niece, Tara Gorman; step daughters, Carrol Goday and Constance Thacker. She was predeceased by the love of her life and first husband, Charles G. Smith; her 2nd husband, Carroll Bates; sister, Grace Armstrong; brother-in-law, John Armstrong; and her nephew, John Armstrong, Jr. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am on Thursday, February 3 at St. James Episcopal Church, 1 St. James Pl., Goshen, NY with Father Carl Lunden officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ethel's name to Inspire of Goshen, 2 Fletcher Street, Goshen, NY 10924.
