Dear Larry,
Today is going to be a difficult day at BOCES. As heartbreaking as this has been for all of us, I am wondering how we are going to tell the students that you're gone. I'm thinking, in particular, of a few adolescent boys who periodicallyl obtain a pass for a drink of water. Under this pretense, they have been able to buy themselves the opportunity to exchange a few sentences with Mr. Mitchell. We have seen what is happening. They linger by your desk, smiling, absorbing your wisdom and experience a few minutes at a time. Where will they go now? Who among us has this to offer them? Yes, today will be a painful day. How I long for a day somewhere in our future when, having crossed this bridge of loss, we will be able to look back fondly and peacefully on memories of our treasured friend, Larry Mitchell.
Goodbye, Larry. May you rest in peace.
